Refrigerated Transport in Eagle Farm & Australia TradeCoast

Cold chain freight for the airport and port trade precinct

EZ Trans moves chilled and frozen freight across Eagle Farm, Pinkenba and the wider Australia TradeCoast precinct, covering airfreight uplift runs, seafood collections and reefer container de-stuff distribution. Our Kedron depot is about 15 kilometres away, roughly 15 to 20 minutes, so pickups can be built backwards from an airline or wharf cut-off.

Eagle Farm runs to other people’s deadlines. Aircraft push back, vessels sail, and a chilled consignment that misses its acceptance time generally waits a full day for the next one. EZ Trans provides temperature-controlled transport through Eagle Farm, Pinkenba, Hamilton and the surrounding trade precinct, where the job is usually less about distance and more about hitting a fixed window with the product still on temperature.

From our Castle Street depot at Kedron the run out is about 15 kilometres, roughly 15 to 20 minutes via Sandgate Road and Kingsford Smith Drive or up over the Gateway Motorway. That puts a pre-cooled vehicle inside the precinct quickly enough to be useful when a cargo terminal releases a shipment early or an exporter finishes packing later than planned.

Who books refrigerated transport around Eagle Farm?

The customer mix here is different from a suburban industrial estate. A large share of the chilled and frozen work is trade freight in transit rather than product being delivered to an end user, which changes how a run has to be planned.

Because so much of it is time-critical, this precinct produces more single-run and after-hours bookings than most areas we cover. Those are quoted the same way as our express courier jobs, on the basis of the window rather than a standing schedule.

Which parts of Australia TradeCoast do you actually cover?

Brisbane City Council describes Australia TradeCoast, home to the Port of Brisbane and Brisbane Airport, as the city’s global trade hub. In practice that is a wide area, and the operational differences between its parts matter when you are booking a refrigerated vehicle.

The estates and the roads that serve them

Routing follows the same logic every time. Kingsford Smith Drive is the direct line in from the city side and is the quicker option outside peak, while the Gateway Motorway is the sensible approach when a run continues south to Murarrie, Hemmant or the Port, or north to the Sunshine Coast. Freight that has to be held between a wharf release and a customer receiving window can sit in refrigerated and ambient storage at Kedron rather than accruing time on a vehicle.

How do airline cargo cut-off times decide the pickup time?

For export work the acceptance cut-off at the cargo terminal sets everything else. The consignment has to be lodged, documented and screened before the aircraft is loaded, so the pickup time is calculated backwards from that deadline, then padded for the Kingsford Smith Drive or Gateway run and for queueing at the terminal dock.

Brisbane Airport states that its cargo operation runs 24 hours a day, with an 82,000 square metre freighter apron, on-site customs and biosecurity, and four on-airport cargo terminal operators. The useful part of that for a shipper is the round-the-clock operation and the fact that clearance happens on site, which is why we treat overnight and pre-dawn collections in this precinct as normal rather than exceptional.

We ask for the cut-off time, the terminal operator and the airline reference before quoting, because a two-hour difference in acceptance changes whether one vehicle can cover the run or the freight needs to leave earlier and be held cold on arrival. We do not guarantee that a load will make a specific flight. What we do is build the run so the controllable part, the transport leg, is not the reason it misses.

Which kind of TradeCoast run matches your freight?

Four patterns cover most of what we carry through Eagle Farm. Identifying which one you are booking makes the quote faster and avoids a vehicle turning up with the wrong equipment for the dock.

Run typeTypical freightWhat drives the timingVehicle setup

If none of the four fits, the work usually falls under customised and special deliveries, which is where we put jobs with unusual equipment, escort or timing requirements.

What temperature control does seafood or imported chilled freight need?

Seafood is the least forgiving freight in this precinct. It arrives cold, it has a short life, and it is often handled three or four times between the supplier and the aircraft or the customer. Food Standards Australia New Zealand sets the baseline that potentially hazardous food must be held at 5C or colder, or 60C or hotter, and notes that the limits apply during receipt, storage, display and transport alike.

The practical risk in TradeCoast work is not the drive. It is the dock: a pallet standing in the open beside a terminal while paperwork is sorted will gain more temperature in twenty minutes than it will lose on a fifteen kilometre run. So we pre-cool, we load quickly, we keep frozen and chilled freight apart, and we record temperature at collection and delivery so the customer has a record for the leg we were responsible for.

EZ Trans does not hold accreditation on a customer’s behalf and does not sign off on anyone else’s food safety system. We plan the run around the handling and temperature requirements of the freight, and if a shipper needs a carrier assessed against their own quality system we would rather have that conversation before the first booking. Our note on choosing a logistics partner covers the questions worth asking.

Can chilled freight from Eagle Farm continue interstate?

Yes, and it often does. An import unpacked at a TradeCoast facility rarely stays in Brisbane, so a de-stuff job frequently becomes a linehaul job in the same week. We run interstate refrigerated freight south from Brisbane as well as regional Queensland work, and where the volume is part-load we consolidate it rather than quoting a full vehicle.

For freight moving north or south the Gateway Motorway link from Eagle Farm is the reason this precinct works well as an origin: a vehicle loaded at Pinkenba can be on the highway without crossing the city. What changes the quote is the temperature band, the pallet count, the timing and whether the freight needs staging at either end.

How do I find the EZ Trans depot?

From Eagle Farm the easiest approach is Kingsford Smith Drive west, then Toombul Road and Sandgate Road north to Kedron, about 15 kilometres and 15 to 25 minutes depending on the Kingsford Smith Drive traffic. The depot is at 2/21 Castle Street, and our directions to our Kedron depot set out access and where larger vehicles should turn in.

Frequently asked questions

Can you collect from Eagle Farm outside business hours for an airfreight cut-off?

Yes. Export work in this precinct regularly needs an evening or pre-dawn collection because acceptance cut-offs and terminal releases do not follow office hours. We ask for the cut-off, the cargo terminal operator and the booking reference so the run is planned backwards from the deadline rather than forwards from the pickup.

Do you handle reefer container de-stuff work off the Port of Brisbane?

We do. A container brought in from Fisherman Islands can be unpacked to pallets and distributed the same day, or moved into temperature-controlled storage at Kedron if the receiving customer is not ready. The freight stays on its set point while the container is worked, and pallet-level temperatures are recorded.

How far is Eagle Farm from the EZ Trans depot?

About 15 kilometres by road, roughly 15 to 20 minutes outside peak via Sandgate Road and Kingsford Smith Drive, or via the Gateway Motorway when the river route is congested. Afternoon peak on Kingsford Smith Drive is the usual cause of delay, so we allow for it rather than quoting a fixed transit time.

Can one vehicle carry chilled and frozen freight on the same TradeCoast run?

Often yes, provided the two are physically separated and the set points are compatible. Where a load includes frozen seafood alongside chilled produce we discuss it before booking, because the safer answer is sometimes two runs. Mixing product that needs different bands in one compartment is where cold chain failures start.

Do you deliver into the Brisbane Airport freight precinct itself?

Yes, both directions. We deliver export consignments to on-airport cargo terminals and collect inbound freight once customs and biosecurity are finished with it. Access requirements vary by terminal operator, so we confirm the delivery point, the reference and any site induction requirement before the driver leaves the depot.
